Why You’re Really Here

“People may say I couldn’t sing, but no one can ever say I didn’t sing.” ~ Florence Foster Jenkins

Writers write.

No matter who praises them or thinks their songs are commercial or recordable or useful in any way, writers just write.

They write because they want to.

They write because something inside compels them to.

They write because it’s the next “right thing” to do with all of this love and praise and worship and angst and pain and hope and joy that’s rumbling around in their soul.

They can ignore it, but not for long.

All the questions around “what if no one likes my songs?” get set aside, even if only momentarily, and the words and melodies flow.

God gives inspiration and the writer captures it to the best of his or her ability and level of craftsmanship, always longing to grow and learn and excel in their abilities.

The nerves skyrocket the moment she’s ready to hit POST in her online songwriting group and she may (or may not) anxiously await responses. Sometimes they come, sometimes not.

Even if seeming rejection ensues (**crickets**), she always comes back to the song. Always. She can’t help it. It’s built in, wired in her soul like her hair or eye color (though even they can be disguised, of course).

And always, like Florence Foster Jenkins’ singing, whether she or he decides to share their songs out in a small group or to the entire world, the song always wins.

Always.

In the end, writers write. Period.

The rest is gravy, icing on the cake, lagniappe (look it up), and the bonus that comes from just doing what you’re created to do.

I always think of Hopkins’ amazing lines in “As Kingfishers Catch Fire” that goes “Selves — goes itself; myself it speaks and spells/ Crying Whát I dó is me: for that I came.”

You’ve come here to write. Let’s do it with all of our hearts today.
