What’s All This Song Coaching Stuff for Songwriters (and Is It Right for You)?

In case you haven’t noticed, coaching is all the rage. Back in the old days, “coaches” were often characterized as those geeky Mr. Something-or-Others, nondescript middle school gym teachers sporting white pocket protectors who had to teach shop or Intro to Geology to justify their existence on campus.

But all that has changed.

Do You Need a Songwriting Coach?

You’re a songwriter longing to have your songs heard by a much wider audience and to get your songs “out there” where listeners can love and download and like and share your songs, right? So, how does that happen and do you need a song coach to do it?

In our current a la carte society, it appears as if everything we really need to know has been sucked from the hallowed halls of the nation’s great universities to be Google-ized, Youtube-ized, and Twitterized into the tiniest byte-sized bits of instantly digestible input, everything from making bombs to making granola balls, and all accessible at the flip of a thumbnail on an iPhone or Android.

Seems like a great thing, right?

Maybe, but maybe not entirely. While we’re all for getting all the information we can get on whatever topic we want to know about, when it comes to songwriting, information by itself is only half the equation.

Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Having knowledge, or even talent, in a subject doesn’t always translate to the successful use of that knowledge, nor will it automatically lead you to the wisdom necessary for your success. You need knowledge and wisdom to win the prize.

Our new ways of gaining knowledge often leave us falling short of wisdom and that’s where coaching comes in.

Why Downloading from Youtube Will Never Be Enough

According to a post on blog.marketresearch.com, “The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as ‘partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.'”

So, while it’s easy to jump on Youtube and find hundreds of hours of how-to-write-songs videos, real growth and refinement happens quicker and more effectively when the songwriter engages a fully qualified song coach, usually a music publisher or professional level songwriter, in order to learn how to apply the knowledge they’ve gained so far and plumb greater depths of creativity and inspiration (think wisdom).

While many great Christian music publishers act as coaches to their roster of songwriters, encouraging them, critiquing their songs as they write them, and providing direction for the songwriter’s overall creativity and output, no publisher in town has the time to raise up songwriters from scratch.

Unfortunately, thousands of CD’s and songs submitted electronically are never reviewed, much less responded to by busy Nashville publishers. The few songs that do get through usually fall short of the calibre of songs produced by pro songwriters, and sadly, the net result is rejection and discouragement for the aspiring songwriter.

That’s where song coaching comes in.

Song coaching is for you if you want to add greater songwriting skills, increase your creative confidence, cut years off the learning curve, and learn how professional songwriters really go at it.

There are also innumerable intangible benefits no one can predict, but we’ve seen the lives of our NCS Coaching clients improve dramatically for learning the creative principles we teach, including marriages being strengthened and new ministries launched.

Don’t Abandon Your Call to Chance

But “the proof is in the pudding,” as they say and you can sample a little bit of the NCS Coaching pie in the following testimonials.

Two of our songwriters just had eleven songs signed by a publisher.

One of our songwriters has released two singles and has found herself on television and radio sharing her story over and over, bringing hope to grieving families (Beckynordquist.com)

Another five songwriting clients have been in the studio, are releasing singles, EP’s, and videos garnering more positive feedback than ever before.

More worship songwriters than we can count are communicating more effectively with their congregations each week and writing the kinds of songs that could go global.

Every client we coach is gaining new clarity and powerful insights on how to step up their game on every level to become powerful communicators.

In short, NCS Coaching for your songwriting can increase your effectiveness exponentially and help you step into the greatest songwriting season of your life.
