Okay, so I admit it. I’d love to have just one Dove Award and just one Grammy. Then I think my life would be complete and I could float off to heaven a happy camper. But, then again, maybe not. Maybe I want two of each….. hhhhhmmmmmm….. how many would it take to make me happy? What about you?
This past week I sat down with my old friend, mega- music producer Greg Nelson, to talk about his lengthy ongoing career in Christian music. He has seven Grammys. And, oh, yeah – he’s got twenty Dove Awards.
His shiny awards are sitting on the shelves in his office surrounded with memorabilia from a highly successful career in songwriting, arranging, and producing for some of the top names in the history of Contemporary Christian Music like Sandi Patty, Larnelle Harris, Steve Green, and Peabo Bryson.
Funny thing, though, the awards don’t seem to be making him as happy as one might think. As we talked, I came to understand more of his heart and got his perspective on success and accolades.
“I’m not the best. I’m not the worst. I don’t keep score, I just write, and God uses it,” he told me.
Well, from the looks of it, God has used his ability to produce and write songs for artists… massively. His songwriting and productions have sold millions and helped the artists he’s worked with become household names for over four decades.
What I loved most from Greg is his authenticity and humility. At 70, he realizes that the awards don’t mean much more than people have appreciated his efforts to serve artists by bringing out the best in them.
I think you’ll love his episode and glean a lot about what makes a man like him truly great. Check out his episode HERE.
